Avril + Dani: The Fight (Part 7)

           Dani ran out of the library with Avril chasing her from behind.  Dani almost got away when she tripped over a small pebble, landing on her stomach. "Ouch." she winced as she looked at her scraped elbows. Avril was right there beside her trying to help her up while slightly giggling.
           "Are you okay, baby?" She laughed. Dani turned to meet Avril's concerned gaze and shrugged.
           "Yeah," Dani said as Avril extended her hand to help her up. Dani took it and instead of getting up she pulled Avril down on top of her taking her into her arms. "You know," she began to say, "I really think this can go long term."
           "Interesting," Avril whispered into Dani's ear.
           "What do you mean?" Dani asked moving her head back a little.
           "Just how that first day when I sneaked into you were trying to convince me you were straight." She giggled a little. "But now you want to have a relationship, it's cute."
           "Don't we already have one?" Dani asked slightly confused.
           "Well, I don't ever remember officially asking you out." Avril rose on her hands and knees and kissed the top of Dani's head. "But before I do that let's get out of here, I hear some boys coming." She picked Dani up and brushed her off.
           "You're right," Dani smiled looking over Avril's shoulder at the group of boys walking their way. "All the boys care about these days is sex and lesbian porn." She sighed. Avril brushed her cheek and then took her hand guiding her away from the Library.
            It was still mid afternoon, Avril had to squint at the rays of the sun. She felt uncomfortable, not because she was with Dani but because she knew the boys where following them. She would do anything to protect Dani, she'd even kill someone, but how could she protect her from verbal abuse when words hurt the most.
            Avril remembered when she was a little girl, how she kept her feelings towards other girls a secret. Her father had also been a devout Christian hating everything that she and her mom was. It wasn't him that had made her gay, he had never touched her, she had lied to Dani. If Dani ever found out what went on behind closed doors, she's walk away and this time never come back.
           "You okay?" Dani asked squeezing Avril's hand tighter. "You look kind of sick."
           "I'm okay." Avril said almost too quickly. "I am just concerned about those boys."
           "We'll be fine." Dani tried to smile at her but Avril turned her gaze away.
           Dani was right about the boys, maybe they would be fine, but she wouldn't be fine if Avril told her what she had really been keeping from her. She'd think she was a freak. "I know, baby." Avril said as they crossed the street and went back to her house.
           Shouts came from behind them and Avril knew they had followed them on purpose. She grabbed Dani by the shoulders, "Get inside." she said.
           "No," Dani said shaking her head, "You can't take them on all at once." Avril's eyes grew dark.
           "I'm used to it." Avril shrugged, "Now go inside." Dani nodded and headed towards the steps. Five boys, all from their grade walked onto the driveway and spit on the ground, smirking. "Come at me, boys." Avril said in a shaky voice.
           "So this is where the lesbians live." One said stepping forward.
           "I got a good one," A sandy haired boy said, "What is the leading cause of death among lesbians?"
           "What?" Said the first boy laughing.
           "Hairballs!." He shouted, the four others laughed with him. Avril clenched her fists and brushed her bangs out of her face.
           "Very funny," She said. "You want to know the leading death for straight males?" Some of the boys cocked their heads. "Lesbian bitches with knives." Avril took a pocket knife she'd been keeping in her boot and flipped it open. Dani opened her mouth and then closed it.
           "Damn, boys." A boy with ginger hair said, "She really is crazy." At that Avril ran forward with the knife swinging it in front of her. She had managed to nick one of them in the hand before being surrounded and grabbed. Avril thrashed around trying to kick her way out of the entrapment.
           "Avril!" Dani had heard herself scream. She came off the porch and starting yelling at the boys. "Let her go!." Her voice rasped, "Please!"
           "You want some?" A boy came towards her holding Avril's knife. "Cus I can make you extra spicy." Dani felt herself about to cry. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. Why did they hate them so much?
           Dani almost turned around and ran back into the house but she couldn't leave Avril alone. She ran at the boy full speed and kicked him in the gut, sending the knife flying out of his hand and hitting the head of another boy. Dani sprinted to where Avril was and jumped one of the boys holding her by her waste. He grunted as she got onto his back and wrapped her arm around his neck.
            Avril thrashed around some more and elbowed the boy holding her from behind in the stomach. She then ran forwards punching another in the side of the face. "Fuck," she said looking at her hand. She turned around looking a Dani who was now on the ground kneeling on the guys chest. As Avril stepped forwards she was met by a blow in the stomach, she gasped and fell to the ground clutching her  abdomen. "The fight's not over yet." Avril said grabbing the pocket knife and swinging to meet the boy's throat. He stopped in mid punch and lowered his hand. "That's right you fuck!." Avril said, kicking him in the chest.
           Avril pulled Dani off the boy on the ground and stepped in front of her, holding the knife out. "Avril.." Dani whimpered. Avril didn't answer she just looked ahead.
           "This isn't over Klondikes!" One shouted. He was met by a few confused looks, "What? it's a mix between an Eskimo and a Lesbian." He shrugged. A car pulled up behind them making everyone jump. It was Avril's mom. She stepped out of the car holding a small pistol.
           "What the fuck is going on here?" She said with narrowed eyes. "You boy's causing trouble?"
           "No Ma'am." They said in unison.
           "Good, now get the fuck off my property." She put the gun on the hood of her car and looked at Avril who quickly hid the knife behind her back.
           "Ya'll are crazy." One said as they took off.
           "Mom," Avril started to say.
           "Just get in the house," She looks at Avril then to Dani, "I have something to tell you both."
